What are dry eyes?

Many people suffer from dry eyes; this is when your tears do not provide adequate lubrication for your eyes.

What are the symptoms of dry eyes?

Some symptoms of dry eyes include:

  • Red eyes

  • A gritty, stinging or scratchy sensation in tour eyes

  • Light sensitivity

  • Blurred vision

  • Watery eye (this is your body’s response to the irritation of dry eyes)


What causes dry eyes?

Dry eyes occur when there is inadequate lubrication for the eyes, this can be due not producing enough tears, or the tears you produce evaporate too quickly. Below are some other causes:

  • Age related

  • Wearing contact lenses

  • Certain underlying medical conditions such as Sjogren’s syndrome

  • Air conditioned or heated environments

  • If it is windy, cold or dusty.

  • Side effects of medications


What help is there for dry eyes?

There are a number of eye drops on the market which help manage the symptoms of dry eyes, these eye drops help lubricate your eyes. In certain cases surgery can be done to prevent tears from draining too quickly.
